THE POWERFUL HOME TREND YOU HAVEN’T THOUGHT OF

Hint: it creates mood without sight or feel.

When it comes to listing 2017’s hottest home trends, scent seems to have missed the memo. But if it’s one thing we learnt from our chat with master perfumer Emma Leah last year, it’s time to stop and smell the roses when it comes to satisfying this unique sense. According to Leah, recognising the power of scent means we can embrace it to create mood, feeling, and memory at home, as opposed to simply masking unpleasant smells from the sock drawer.

Whether it’s re-living your tropical island getaway with a Hawaiian blossom candle or spritzing the living room with red berry citrus because it reminds you of your favourite dessert – candles, diffusers, and the like have been a part of creating personal spaces for a long time. But before you opt for that tired vanilla and cinnamon combination you’ve been living with for years, try something new and invigorating with an on-trend scent.

What’s hot in home fragrance

It’s out with the food smells and in with the great outdoors says Leah. 2017 is all about surrounding yourself with scent that brings the outside, in, be it the smell of fresh rain, the woody hint of forests, or the rich and raw scent of the bush.

If you’ve spied your favourite fragrance in the laundry, you can safely assume it’s on its way out. It’s scent over saturation (most often achieved when it hits popularity in cleaning products) that signals new trends on the horizon. ‘The market used to love citrus fragrances until orange cleaning products dominated, and now it has a negative association,’ she says.

Trends come and go, so it’s always advised to use them as you would any type of trend – as an inspiring guide. When choosing your new home fragrance, always opt for quality, beauty, appeal, and positive reinforcements.
