5 REASONS TO LOVE CAST IRON COOKWARE
Roasts, cakes, stews and soups thick enough to stand your spoon up in – you name it, cast iron can cook it! And apart from being one of the most versatile types of cookware on the market, particularly well-suited to the kind of hearty comfort food we all love to tuck into once the temperature drops, here’s five more reasons why cast iron should shoot straight to the top of your winter wish list.
1. Nonstick without the chemicals.
Give health-harming chemical coatings the flick and say hello to better-for-you nonstick! Cast iron cookware can be either enamel coated or seasoned (a process which uses vegetable oil and salt to create a nonstick coating), so it’s a great alternative for anyone wanting to eliminate chemicals – and the associated health issues – in their home. Nonstick cast iron also means you can cook with less oil and create healthier meals.
2. It helps boost your iron intake.
Feeling a little flat? You might need more iron in your diet, and while we often think that a medium-rare steak is the only answer, you might be surprised to learn that food cooked in a seasoned cast iron pan will absorb significant amounts of iron leached from the pan itself. This is most effective with moist, acidic dishes like spaghetti sauce, stews and apple sauce, for example. It’s by no means a substitute for eating iron-rich foods, but it’s a great way to supplement a healthy diet.
3. It keeps meals warm for longer.
Cast iron’s amazing ability to conduct and retain heat remains unchallenged by any other cooking material. Not only does this mean it cooks at very high temperatures, but also locks in heat to prevent your dish from going cold once it’s presented on the table – pretty handy for those notoriously late dinner guests!
4. You can take it from stove to oven to table.
‘Oven to table’ is a term we’re all familiar with, but very few cooking items can claim the trifecta: stove to oven to table. Whether your casserole or pan is cast completely from iron, or affixed with oven-proof handles, consider it the ultimate one pot wonder! There’s also no denying the aesthetic charm of serving right from a colourful cast iron pot – it’s got rustic country cooking written all over it.
5. It will last forever.
Last but certainly not least, cast iron – if you couldn’t tell from the name – is pretty much indestructible, and it’s not uncommon for cast iron cookware to stay in the family for generations. The iconic style remains largely unchanged and truly timeless, though you can get your style kicks through new enamel colours that are often released seasonally.
