5 UNEXPECTED PLACES TO PARK YOUR BAR CART

Plus liquor-free styling ideas.
For some, hosting cocktail hour might be such an infrequent event that acquiring a bar cart purely for the purpose of displaying and mixing liquor can’t really be justified. But beyond aperitifs and afternoon tea, bar carts and tea trolleys are amazingly useful objects… and we wholeheartedly encourage you to get one (or three)! They’re essentially shelves – attractive ones at that – on wheels. They’re compact, they move within and between rooms with ease, and how you choose to use them is only limited by your imagination.

If you’re already on top of this popular trend – whether because you inherited one from great aunt Agnes, or you couldn’t resist that decorative brass number you saw at the antique markets – you can count on it being one of the most versatile furniture pieces in your home.

In The Living Room
Just because it’s in your living room, there’s no rule that says you have to display alcohol, glassware and mixers on a bar cart. But if an afternoon tipple is right up your alley, check out how to style a bar cart here. For everyone else, a bar cart in the living room is a brilliant side table, plant stand, mini book shelf, or log storage by the fireplace. Wheel it to your favourite reading corner and you’ve also got yourself a handy place to pop your cup of coffee. If you’re using it to display plants, a bar cart scores extra points because you can easily move it in and out of the sun as required.

In The Laundry
Take the bore out of weekly chores by giving this hardworking room a little facelift. Wheel in a bar cart and add a few stylish baskets and canisters to store laundry powder, cleaning products, pegs and any other essentials that you use regularly. If your products don’t have the prettiest packaging, disguise them with baskets and enamel tins. This is a quick fix for renters, or laundries that are seriously lacking in storage space.

In The Bedroom

Creative bedside table substitution. Is there anything more stylish? Butler’s trays and tea trolleys can be just the ticket when your style is a little quirky, and when boxy drawers leave you feeling uninspired. A bar cart at your bedside also makes vacuuming easy. Simply unplug your lamp and wheel it away to gain access to hard-to-reach corners. It easily holds all your usual bedside suspects, while the absence of drawers will (hopefully) discourage the accumulation of clutter. Don’t forget to park one in your guest bedroom, too.

In The Bathroom
When it comes to statement furniture, the poor old bathroom is easily overlooked. But a beautiful brass trolley can do wonders to warm up and add personality to a stark, cold bathroom. Display rolled white towels on the shelves along with some luxurious spa products to add a boutique hotel touch. Or nestle one beside the bath with a selection of body scrubs, scented candles and books. Exposing soft textures and displaying surprising elements will turn a utilitarian space into a charming sanctuary.

In The Office
Keep your desk clutter-free by parking a bar cart nearby to keep books, folders, files and stationery. Try not to let it become a messy dumping ground; style it with baskets, trays and bookends to ensure your space stays orderly, productive and easy on the eye. Add a plant and keep a tea set on top to encourage enjoyable breaks away from the screen.
