BEHIND THE BRAND: BAMBURY
From the corner of a garage in Fremantle to becoming one of the most iconic household names, Bambury’s success story is folklore. We chatted with managing director Andrew Lodge who began the brand from his garage in 1994 and sold his first sheets and towels to retailers in Western Australia. Welcome to thehome.com.au Andrew.
Tell us about you. How long have you been designing and making designer bedroom, bathroom and living products?
Bambury has been designing products for 25 years, and the range includes products for every room of the house – the living room, the bathroom, the bedroom and the kitchen. Our Beach range is also a large part of our collection, in particular our Egyptian cotton jacquard beach towels. From very early on in the business, design has been a big focus at Bambury, with our in-house design team based in Perth, at our Head Office. We believe that the reputation of our brand is reflected in the attention to detail applied when developing all of our products. Our design team strives to create the perfect balance of quality, practicality and comfort within all of our products, while staying true to the latest in interior trends and textile technology.
Tell us a little about what has inspired your latest lifestyle collection?
Our latest collection is our Summer 2018/19 range. It includes everything from quilt covers, cushions and throws; to Beach Towels, Yoga Mats and Tote Bags. The range was heavily inspired our natural Australian environment – the colours, the shapes and the textures, and even the animals, as seen on our Kids Beach Poncho Pals. The patterns in this range feature native floral elements, which have mostly been water-coloured by hand. The colours are inspired by beautiful clay pinks, and ochre tones, combined with a soothing Eucalyptus shade of green. We also threw a few fun Rainbows into the mix too! Our cushions from this range have lots of beautiful textures, made using different techniques; from embroidery and macramé, to interesting weaves, fringes and tassels.
There’s an eclectic mix in your collection, style from Turkey, Hawaii. However, it all comes together beautifully. How do you keep designs fresh and interesting and still convey a cool and colourful look?
Like most creative people, our design team never rests, they are always taking everything in, and on the constant look out for exciting new ideas, trends and products. We also travel overseas regularly to trade shows and to see what the rest of the world is doing. Once a range is complete, we love creating stunning imagery that hopefully provides inspiration for the home, while also reflecting our original vision for the range. Design inspiration can come from a wide range of sources, but we aim to have beautiful pieces that still all work well together.
Your collections are bright, colourful, fun and elegant. Who typically buys Bambury?
As Bambury is based in Perth, we are constantly inspired by Western Australia’s coastal lifestyle; endless beaches, clear skies and open spaces. We develop our own artwork, and work closely with our manufacturers around the world to source and produce quality products. Although we are always mindful of fashion trends, we also have a passion for creating beautiful products that embrace thoughtful details and product longevity. Typically, the Bambury customer is from a regular modern-life family who works hard and takes pride in creating a beautiful home, they want classic and on-trend products that are affordable and practical, comfortable, without sacrificing quality.
How do you come up with what collections you will include and the types of products?
When we design a new collection, we come up with a wide range of ideas and new products, and then we edit them down based on things such as current trends, the product’s uniqueness and saleability, and how well the product fits our overall vision for the range. Once our artwork is drawn up, we move to the sampling phase, we check the samples for colour, quality and any other concerns, not everything we sample goes to final production. Once we are happy with the samples, we edit again to make sure we are putting our best and most exciting range forward. It can take a while, but it is always so great to see the range come together, with our ideas and drawings brought to life. While we love creating beautiful decorating items, we also enjoy developing our ‘problem-solver’ products, these items have a strong aim in addressing a particular issue. For example, our Tru-Fit sheets are designed to fit well and stay-on all mattresses, our Snap-Cold Towels help you stay cool while exercising, and our Sonar Thermal Balancing Range helps regulate your body temperature while you sleep.
Name a designer or artist that inspires you and why?
We are inspired by so many artists and designers, and it constantly changes too. At the moment, we are really inspired by West Australian and Central Desert Aboriginal artists. We love the beautiful earthy colours and pigments that the artists use, as well as the patterns, natural textures and Australian landscape subject matter – all of which are at the forefront of our inspiration right now. We were recently lucky enough to be lent a Hector Jandany painting from the Japingka Aboriginal Art Gallery in Fremantle, which will appear in some of our photography for our next collection.
