HOW TO PACK THE PERFECT PICNIC

Ideas and essentials for a great day out.

Summer is the season of sunshine, fun, love and abundance, and there’s really no better way to celebrate it than with a picnic. Packing the perfect picnic is quite an art form though, so we’ve pulled together a list of ideas and essentials for your perusing pleasure. Enjoy!
Picnic ideas
The Food
A picnic is most definitely one of those ‘the simpler, the better’ occasions. Pick up a selection of your favourite cheeses, dips, cured meats, fresh veggies and a fresh-from-the-bakery baguette. Try not to overdo it on volume though – remember that any uneaten food is likely to end up in the bin if it’s a warm day.
The Basket
From the traditional to the practical, there are plenty of options in the world of picnic baskets. For maximum style points, it’s hard to go past a classic wicker basket with plaid lining. Many baskets feature built-in plates and cutlery, but we suggest avoiding those and purchasing disposable tableware instead… no one likes to put dirty plates back into their beautifully lined basket.
The Rug
For practicality’s sake, we’re big fans of a plastic-backed waterproof rug – the last thing you want is damp from the ground seeping through to your clothes. If you’re struggling to find one you like, keep in mind can always pick up a cheap plastic shower curtain and pop it down under your regular (super stylish) rug instead.
The Glassware
Plastic stemless wine glasses are sturdy, safe and – bonus – look great in Instagram photos. They also pack inside each other neatly, for simple storage on your way to and from the picnic.
The Tableware
Go eco-friendly and choose biodegradable plates and cutlery. Not only are they stylish enough for your social media flatlay, they save you from washing up and they’re good for the environment.
The Wine
Arguably the most important of all picnic ideas! After all; what’s a summer picnic without a glass or two of your favourite plonk? A French rosé has just the right amount of style for an afternoon in the park, followed closely by Champagne or Australian sparkling (Tasmania is usually a good choice).
