5 CLEANING HACKS THAT WORK
The sun is shining and birds are chirping, which means it’s time to get your cleaning done! For the best results with little fuss, check out our favourite cleaning hacks from around the web.
Vacuum Pack Away Your Winter Wardrobe
As far as cleaning hacks go this one is pretty simple, but also incredibly effective! Clutter is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to that messy-house feeling, so keep yours to a minimum by packing that winter wardrobe and bedding into a vacuum bag until you need it again. These things are pretty epic space savers – we’re talking up to 75% of space – and they fit nicely under the bed or in unused space atop cupboard shelves.
Clean Pet Hair from Your Couch
Sure, the whole family loves Benji/Bella/Duke but we’re betting no one really loves the hair all over the couch. When the vacuum cleaner doesn’t cut it, try this low-tech trick instead: put on your rubber dishwashing glove and rub it rapidly on the upholstery to build up an electrical charge that the hair can stick to. When you’re done, either rinse the gloves under water (make sure you’ve got a sink strainer in to catch the hair) or simply toss the gloves in the bin!
Clean Your Vases with Aquarium Gravel
Spring blooms look far more impressive in a crystal clear vase, but getting your vase looking perfect can be tricky. Try this: fill your vase around 1/3 of the way with water and add a handful of aquarium gravel to the vessel. Give it a good shake and strain the water through a sieve (saving the gravel for next time). The gravel should remove any of that annoying stuck-on dirt and grime that a regular cloth struggles to access.
Turn Your Dishwasher Into a Multi-Tasking Appliance
Sure, your dishwasher gets a big pat on the back for the work it does on your dishes, but let’s face it, it’s kinda just fulfilling its job description. But did you know your dishwasher is good for a whole lot more than that. Kids’ toys, dog toys, golf balls, keys, mops, refrigerator shelves, and even hub caps are just some of the things you can throw in there! Just be mindful of your setting choices.
Clean Your Microwave Without Chemicals
Spied splashes of last week’s spaghetti Bolognese on your microwave door? Get it looking and smelling fresh again by fill a bowl halfway with water. Squeeze in some lemon juice, a dash of white vinegar, and drop a few slices of lemon in, too. Microwave on high for 3-5 minutes and then let it sit (with the door closed) for another five minutes. Open the door and wipe clean for a sparkling, fresh smelling microwave.
