Preparing the surface correctly will ensure long-lasting results, so a crucial first step is to use a high pressure hose to clean your surface, then allow to dry for 24 hours before painting. Choose a colour that will compliment your exteriors. To match the a home’s exterior, I often choose a slightly darker shade on the paths and drive. Six top tips to help your DIY paint project
Purchase your paint: If you’re unsure of how much paint you’ll need, use Taubmans paint calculator to get your project underway. Ensure you always have the right tools to provide the best re-fresh for your home!
Ensure the surface is clean before application: Wash the surface using a sponge and soapy solution to get rid of any dirt or grime. Then hose down and allow time to dry. This will ensure the paint will adhere well to the surface and not the dirt or grime.
Look out for damage: Take a good look at all the walls for any damage or surface lumps and bumps. If there is any peeling or flaking areas, scrape them to remove the loose paint then gently sand the surface down. To avoid exterior paint blistering or flaking over time, make sure you test a small area of the existing paint for adhesion before repainting.
Patch up: Fill any dents or nail holes in the walls with a pre-mixed exterior grade filler, using filling blades. Once dry, sand down the top to ensure a smooth and even surface.
Apply from the top: Taubmans always recommend painting from the top down, to prevent paint drops from dripping onto an already painted surface.
Recoat: Apply between 2-3 coats or until you are satisfied with the finish and provide the best protection for your home!
